How Your Charges May Be Classified
Alaskan laws divide misdemeanors into two categories based on their severity. The first category, class A misdemeanors, generally includes nonviolent crimes against individuals or public administrators, or offenses against public health and order. For example, petty theft in which nobody was harmed may be considered a class A misdemeanor.
The second category, class B misdemeanors, may involve offenses against property or offenses that result in minor physical injuries. For example, some types of assault may be considered class B misdemeanors.
Similarly, Alaska’s laws also divide felonies into three categories based on the amount of damage they cause. Felonies are classified as class A, class B or class C level crimes and the duration of jail time, amount of fines and penalties vary with the type.
